Neel Barahi Bhaktapur

Neel Barahi’s renowned tantric temple stands on a hillock in Bode of Madhyapur Thimi in the center of a forest. The temple structure itself is very easy, but it is adorned with different sculptures and artifacts. In the medieval period, the temple was created.

The temple is built in a Guhyeshwori-Dakshinkali-like style. The shrine space, however, is quite distinct from the other shrines and houses a plain rock, the object of worship. A Gawaksha with metal plates is also present, which is said to safeguard the deity.

Bode’s inhabitants perform the Neel Barahi dance for four days each year during Rishi Purnima. The dance group is made up of nineteen dancers accompanied by a twenty-seven distinct instruments orchestra. The dance in the local Newari dialect is known as Pyakhan.
