Kirtipur City

Kirtipur is a wonderful exception to the usual settlements of Newari. Perched on twin hillocks and about 5 km from Kathmandu clinging to the saddle. To the south, Kirtipur has two hamlets of satellites, Panga and Nagaon.

The village’s history dates back to the 12th century when it was a Patan outpost but became a distinct kingdom later on. The kingdom was so strong that it was defeated three times by the Most Mighty King of Nepalese history when he attempted to unify it with Nepal. It is still possible to see remains of the fortified walls and portion of the initial 12 doors.

Although most people in the village are the Newar, the cultural differences and the daily ways of life can be seen during the tour as most people are farmers and have a unique culture and tradition. There are also some exciting shrines like Bag Bhairav, Chlanchu Vihar etc. next to the village visit. The temple of Goddess Dakshinakali, which is an significant pilgrimage for Nepalese people, is located in addition to Kirtipur. You can also combine a visit to Kirtipur with a visit to Chovar and Panga.
