In Newar culture, marriage is a two-family social union. For their sons and daughters, the parents arrange marriage. After the family choice of the groom and bride, the marriage is verified by providing 10 betel nuts from the groom’s family to the bride along with fruits, sweets etc. (known as lakha).
The marriage ceremony takes place at the astrologer’s planned moment. It is conducted by Swayamber, Honkegu, Chipa Theeke (symbol of sharing all). Bride introduces ten betel nuts to all members of her family. Her mother’s brother, paju, carries her out of the house on his back. He then introduces her to the family of the groom.
The relatives of the bride visit the house of the groom on the fourth day, to see how the bride is being handled, known as Khwah soye (see the face of the bride).
